Cool Classics! Art Exhibit at Uptown Branch

If you think it would be thrilling to live in an art museum, you share a passion with Norman the mouse, hero of Norman the Doorman by Don Freeman. And if you love to create art, you share a passion with the children of Horace Greeley Elementary School, who are participating in the integrated arts activities of Cool Classics.

In this exciting after-school program, classic books are the starting point for adventures in reading, art, music, drama and ideas. With Norman the Doorman as the focal point, the children from Greeley are engaged in an intensive exploration of how art can transform and tame us. They visited the Uptown Branch in October to hear children's librarian Miss Laura read the story about a mouse who eludes a zealous security guard and enters a sculpture in the museum's competition.

The children have begun to create their own art based on this book, as well as maps of their dream journeys inspired by Follow the Dream by Peter Sis and Encounter by Jane Yolen. Their most recent pieces are on exhibit in the lobby of the Uptown Branch.

Cool Classics! is the creation of award-winning journalist and broadcaster Mara Tapp.
